The woman held her six-month-old baby tightly against her chest as she raised the phone to her ear. Her cheek was still red from the slap, but the fear had disappeared from her eyes. Her drunken husband laughed mockingly. “Who are you going to call? Your father is dead, and the company you used to be so proud of no longer exists. No one is coming to save you.” Her mother-in-law crossed her arms and spoke coldly. “All your property belongs to our family now. You are nothing more than a useless woman trapped at home taking care of a baby.” The woman stared at them for several seconds before speaking into the phone in an icy voice. “Attorney Gabriel Reyes, enough is enough. Carry out the final order my father left behind.”
The calm voice of Attorney Gabriel Reyes came from the other end of the line. He was the longtime legal adviser and trusted administrator of her late father’s estate. “Are you certain? Once we put this into motion, you will regain full control, and everyone who has used or taken your property will be investigated.” The woman looked down at the crying baby in her arms and replied, “I’m certain. I remained silent because I wanted to protect my family. But if I continue enduring this, they will destroy my child’s future too.” Attorney Gabriel Reyes remained silent for a few seconds before responding, “I have been waiting for this call for three years.” The moment the call ended, the husband’s and mother-in-law’s phones began ringing at the same time.
The drunkenness immediately vanished from the man’s face when he read the notifications on his screen. All his bank accounts had been frozen, he had been suspended from his position as chief executive officer, and his access to every company had been revoked. The mother-in-law also turned pale after receiving an order to leave the villa within twenty-four hours. “What have you done?” she screamed. “You legally transferred the company to my son!” The woman calmly replied, “I only granted him temporary management authority after giving birth. I never transferred ownership.” The man furiously threw his phone onto the sofa. “You’re lying! You signed every document I gave you!” She looked directly into his eyes. “Yes, I signed your documents. But you never knew that my father secretly left behind another agreement.”
Suddenly, the door opened. Attorney Gabriel Reyes entered with a forensic auditor, two security guards, and the company’s former chief financial officer. The attorney placed an old wooden box on the table and explained, “Before his death, her father created an irrevocable family trust. He knew his daughter might surrender everything for love, so he placed fifty-one percent of the shares, all the patents, and ownership of the parent companies inside the trust.” The man completely lost the color in his face. The attorney continued, “All you managed to obtain were several subsidiaries and operating accounts. The true control never belonged to you.”
The woman looked at her husband as the memories of all her sacrifices came flooding back. “Before I married you, I managed more than three thousand employees. I built my own company, negotiated contracts worth millions of dollars, and never depended on anyone. But you said you wanted a wife who would always put her family first. Your mother said that a good woman should stay at home, have children, and take care of her husband.” Tears began rolling down her cheeks. “I left the board of directors, handed the management over to you, and used my own money to save your family’s failing business. This villa, your car, your mother’s jewelry, and even the money you use to get drunk all came from me. But when I became exhausted from caring for our child, you called me a burden.”
The man’s voice immediately softened. He stepped closer and tried to take his wife’s hand. “I knew nothing about the trust. My mother forced me to do everything. We can still start over.” However, the auditor opened her tablet and played a recording. The man’s voice echoed clearly through the room. “As soon as she signs the power of attorney, transfer the money to the new company. Then we’ll claim that she has postpartum depression so we can take custody of the baby.” The mother-in-law’s voice followed. “Once we have the child, we will also be able to control the inheritance.” Mother and son stood frozen. The woman closed her eyes in pain. She had believed they merely despised her, but in reality, they had been planning for a long time to steal her company, her child, and even her dignity.
Attorney Gabriel Reyes took out the final folder. “These are the complaints for fraud, embezzlement, domestic abuse, and conspiracy to manipulate child custody. And this is the resolution restoring her position as chairwoman, effective immediately tonight.” The security guards stepped forward and confiscated the keys, corporate phones, and access cards belonging to the mother and son. The man dropped to his knees before his wife. “Please, don’t take everything away from me.” The woman held her baby even more tightly. “I am not taking anything from you. I am only reclaiming everything you stole from me.” As the guards escorted them away, she spoke her final words. “I once gave up my power because I believed love was the safest home. But my father was the one who saw the storm approaching before he died and quietly left behind a secret door through which I could escape.” Attorney Gabriel Reyes bowed his head before her and said, “Welcome back, Madam Chairwoman.”
